Gordon Hope Grant: (1875-1962)Born in San Francisco, Grant is known for his etchings and paintings of marine subjects. Studied at the Lambeth and Heatherley art schools in London. Skilled with watercolor, Grant was honored many times by the American Watercolor Society. His reputation as a marine painter became much stronger after 1906 when prints of his painting of the U.S.S. Constitution went on the market with popular reception, and the monies were used to preserve the old ship. Grant and others were successful lobbying Congress to designate the vessel a national monument, and Grant's painting of the U.S.S. Constitution is in the White House collection, where it has hung in the Oval Office. Memberships included the Society of illustrators, Salmagundi Club, Allied Artists of America, New York Society of Painters, American Federation of Artists and others. Member of NA, ANA, Allied Artists Am, AFA, SAE, Chicago SE, AWCS, Phil. WCC, Baltimore, Ship Model Society and WCC, Calif, and others. Exhibited at AIC 1906-11, 1913, 1937, 29, 33 and 35-62. Also at NAD 1926 (prize), SC, 1929 (prize), 1931 (prize) AWCS (prize) Chicago SE 1935 (prize) PAFA 1936-37, Paris Salon, 1937 (medal winner), All. Aritsts American, 1942 (prize), LOC 1944-46. Works on display at Kendall Whaling Museum, Mystic Seaport Museum, New York Historical Soc., MMA, NYPL, Joslyn Museum, Richmond Museum of Art, Bropoks Mem Art. Gal, Davenport Museum of Art, New Britain, US Naval Academy, the White House, Corcoran Gallery, MMA, and in Kennebunkport, MA. Extremely well listed and collected artist.
